Big Garden Bird Watch

Over 1 Million people took part in the Big Garden Bird Watch this year and 17million birds were counted.

Each year people have help with research into garden wildlife by getting involved and counting the birds they see in their gardens during this national bird count.

Over the last 50 years 40 million birds have disappeared from the UK and the results of surveys such as this help to increase understanding of how birds use our gardens and how we can improve spaces in towns, cities and the countryside for them.

So, how did the results come in this year?

The house sparrow was the most frequently spotted bird in peoples gardens this year. It has held the top spot for the last 18 years! Robins and blackbirds have increased in number. Sadly Greenfinches and Goldfinches have recorded their lowest numbers ever. 16 of the top 20 species have declined in number since last year.

Goldfinches have declined in number according to the 2021 Big Garden Bird Watch.

We can all do our bit to help British birds. Offering good quality food plus clean water, providing nesting sites and thinking about how we organise our gardens or yards throughout the year.

At Giddy Gate Farm we are committed to helping UK birds thrive. We have 38 acres of land dedicated to wildlife habitats and winter bird feeding stations plus nearly 7 miles of well managed hedgerows which are a valuable resource providing food, shelter and nesting sites.
